‘WANTED’ MEDIA SEMINARS: Breaking In

Thoughts on ‘Breaking In’ – a media seminar about the Australian TV industry. The second in the series of the ‘Wanted’ Media Seminars hosted by third year media students at RMIT.

The seminar provided great insight into how the Australian TV industry runs. The questions asked by the host were well thought-out and logically structured. This allowed the discussion to remain relevant and informative throughout.

Asking the guests to share the “origin stories” proved to be very insightful. Hearing about each guest’s pathway opened my eyes to all the different avenues through which you might get your first break in television – whether it is by volunteering at a community TV station, or through an internship, or even by “politely pestering” people. This was certainly one of the most helpful points discussed during the seminar as it made me reflect upon my own experiences and how I might go about getting a foot in the door in Australian television.

Breaking In - TV Seminar

The event was successful in achieving the tricky task of incorporating both the “Wanted” theme of the series, and the unique topic of the seminar (TV). Going for a “Breaking Bad” inspired approach was genius. The show is arguably the most important piece of television in recent times; and it also fits into the crime genre that the seminars need to convey!

The staging was fun , but somewhat unprofessional. I guess the set-up was meant to convey the sense of parody of the fake game show. The group had a few problems with timing; having to skip some of the pre-planned questions. Also, the communication between the host and the crew in charge of the slideshow could have been more effective.

Overall, I thought the seminar was not only very entertaining, but also highly informative. The effort and work that went into organizing the event was apparent, and the attention to detail was superb (I am sure everyone loved those blue “meth” lollies).
